The Book of Susan is a work of factual fiction concerning the discovery of four scrolls composed in the final years of Jesus, predicated on allegations that certain scrolls were suppressed by the church pertaining to same-sex relationships. The contemporary understanding of homosexuality as a sexual orientation or identity was absent from the worldview represented in the Dead Sea Scrolls. Ancient writings frequently regarded same-sex encounters as behaviors rather than as manifestations of an individual’s fundamental identity.
The composition of The Book of Susan was attempted multiple times and remained dormant on several occasions due to concerns about offending individuals with strong religious convictions regarding the women depicted in this work. I firmly assert that we successfully attained a balance between scripture and the narratives of extraordinary women in the Roman Empire who exclusively loved other women.
